Centuries to captain Graeme Smith (132), Jacques Kallis (110) and AB de Villiers (135 not out) and the side were able to comfortably declare just before tea on day two of the second Test on a healthy score of 543 for the loss of six wickets.
Smith and Alviro Petersen set the scene when they put on a 99 run partnership before Petersen (52) became a victim of Shane Shillingwood.
A lazy, looping shot that was nicely caught by Kemar Roach had the talented opener kicking his heels on the way back to the pavilion when he knew a big score was on the cards.
Batting on a wicket as flat as a pancake, Smith was severe on the West Indies' bowlers with spinner Sulieman Benn eventually going for 124 runs in 30 overs.
For Kallis it was Test century number 35 as he combined with de Villiers for a fourth wicket partnership of 138 before eventually succumbing to Shillingwood with the teams score on 421.
Kallis' knock now puts him in the elite band of players to score more than 11000 Test runs with only Australian Ricky Ponting and Indian Sachin Tendulkar scoring more centuries.
The only players not to reach the half-century mark during the Proteas innings were Hashim Amla (44), Mark Boucher (17 not out) and Dale Steyn (20).
At the close of day two the West Indies had lost the wicket of opening batsman Travis Dowling to be on 86 for one.
