The suspects were spotted by a security guard while breaking into a house and stripping it of its doors, windows, tiles and frames on Friday in Lengstone near Newcastle.
The men, aged between 20 and 30, were apprehended by police dogs as they tried to escape in the nearby bushes.
Police had responded to a tip-off from the security guard who alerted them to the break-in at the house.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said seven suspects were spotted by a security guard breaking into the house.
He said the suspects ran into the bushes after hearing police sirens. Five suspects were arrested.
"The house was vandalised and property removed from it.
"The house belonged to a municipality employee who had rented it out to someone who had moved out, leaving it vacant.
"The suspects removed door frames, window frames, copper pipes, carpets and tiles with an intention to sell the items," said Mdunge.
He said the dog unit combed the bushes looking for the suspects and managed to arrest five men.
They also confiscated a Ford Laser that was allegedly used to transport the stolen items from the house.
He said the municipality had guards looking after the house in the evening, hence the suspects pounced during the day.
Mdunge said the men are expected to appear in court today.
He said the police were confident that the remaining two suspects involved in the robbery would be arrested soon.
