THIS weekend, Rustenburg was painted yellow by an invasion of Socceroos fans.

The Australian fans, with their miniature kangaroos and flags, had a blast in North West. Even at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium the Australians outnumbered the Ghanaians.

Both groups of fans entered the stadium in a jovial mood. But when they left the stadium after the match they were dejected because of the 1-1 draw. Australia scored less than 20 minutes into the game.

When the match started the stadium was empty. By the end of the first half was when the stadium started filling up.

Local fans complained about the Australians throwing beer bottles on to the pitch. Fifa is examining stadium safety after the incident. The organisation's spokesperson, Nicolas Maingot, says it will take a closer look at the incident.

The biggest challenge in Rustenburg is the park-and-ride system. The queues are too long and it took about an hour and a half to get on to the bus.

Bruce James from Australia said: "The park-and-ride is not properly done. We have been out of the stadium for a long time but we are still waiting for the bus to get here."
