A NEWCASTLE man was rushed to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital in a critical but stable condition after narrowly escaping death in two incidents on Wednesday night.

It is believed the man had tried to kill himself with his 22-calibre handgun but the bullet got stuck in his skull. When he stumbled on to the road to seek help, he was struck by a truck.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said: "It is alleged that the suicidal man had attempted to take his own life last night by shooting himself in the head with a 22 handgun while seated in his car.
"The bullet went through the mouth and lodged in his skull."
Wicks said the man was still fully awake and conscious when he left his vehicle to seek help when the truck struck him.
He said an aero-medical helicopter with an advanced life support trauma team on board was dispatched to airlift him from a medical facility in Newcastle.
Wicks said the man was treated and stabilised on the scene by Netcare 911 paramedics from Newcastle and was transported by ambulance to hospital.
Due to the displacement of bullet , the man had to be transported to Umhlanga Hospital so he could receive specialised care, Wicks said.
