Cop arrested with drugs, cellphones

A KWAZULU-NATAL police officer, who is involved in the World Cup security, has been arrested after being found in possession of drugs.

A KWAZULU-NATAL police officer, who is involved in the World Cup security, has been arrested after being found in possession of drugs.

The officer is suspected of selling heroine and cocaine to soccer fans, according to Brigadier Phindile Radebe.

Radebe said Warrant Officer Thirimugan Gounden was arrested on Wednesday night after the police searched his car at a roadblock in South Beach, near a Fifa Fan Park.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the off-duty policeman was also drunk.

Mdunge said Gounden was found with R10000 cash, five cellphones and an undisclosed quantity of heroine and cocaine.

"We believe he sold the drugs to the people who gave him the R10000 and cellphones.

"We have not yet established the street value of the drugs, but we believe it was for resale and not for private use.

"He has been charged with drunken driving and possessing banned substance," he said.

Mdunge said the discovery was "like a slap in the face for the police who are trying to fight crime during this critical World Cup time".

Gounden appeared in the Durban magistrate's court yesterday and was released on R5000 bail. His case was postponed to October 15. - Corrinne Louw
