THULANI Ngcobo, the winner of the Last Fan Standing competition, will attempt to break the Guinness world record for the most matches watched at a Fifa World Cup when he travels more than 17000km and watches more than 3420 minutes of live football over 31 days.

The current record is 20 matches and Ngcobo will attempt to watch 38.

Ngcobo was on day six yesterday of his 31-day Guinness World Record attempt, and has already watched 11 of the 38 matches.

These matches included yesterday's daytime clash between Honduras and Chile at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit and last night's match between Bafana Bafana and Uruguay at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.

To meet the requirements of his 38-match record attempt Ngcobo will in some instances attend a match with a lunch-time kickoff at, say, Cape Town Stadium and then jet off immediately after the game to be on time for the evening tie, say, in Johannesburg.

If all goes according to plan Ngcobo is expected to break the world record on June 25 and Guinness Book of World Records is sending out an adjudicator that week to verify the results and present him with an official record certificate. Ngcobo's incredible journey began in August last year when he became the grand prize winner of the MTN8 Last Fan Standing competition, beating thousands of other competitors.

This genuine football fanatic, who attends up to four or five games a week during the local football season, has been gearing up for the biggest moment of his life since being announced as the winner.

"I'm grateful that I am experiencing all of this because I am absolutely crazy about football. Ayoba to MTN for making my wildest dream come true," said an elated Ngcobo. - Sowetan
