Fat cats lack feeling

WE have a bunch of so-called corporate leaders whose insensitivity knows no bounds.

WE have a bunch of so-called corporate leaders whose insensitivity knows no bounds.

Electricity utility Eskom is an example.

The head honchos at the parastatal remain firm: no more than a seven percent increase for workers, some of whom barely survive on their earnings.

Bosses, however, expect to share an up to R16million performance bonus - shame on them - despite running the conglomerate down over the years.

It needed a multi-billion dollar loan and and the burdening of consumers with a whopping hike to save the power utility.

Yet they were willing to pay CEO Jacob Maroga R80million over five years.

Maroga is now claiming R85million , which he says would have been his remuneration at the end of his term in April 2012. That amount can build thousands of low-cost houses.

Quite rightly the salaries of top executives are in the spotlight worldwide. Remember, it was these bigwigs who nearly sank the world in the recent recession.

In South Africa disparities between bosses and ordinary workers are becoming increasingly astronomical.

Bosses in our parastatals eat big time, while ordinary folks make do with crumbs.

Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan has also called for a re-look at the fat cat syndrome.

US President Barrack Obama has already said that earnings are outrageous.

Indeed, any boss who shows no guilt because of this stink is heartless.

Cosatu is right and we join in their cry: Kuzekube nini.
