World Cup notches up record viewership worldwide

MORE than 10million television viewers in South Africa watched the host nation play Mexico to open the World Cup at Soccer City on Friday.

MORE than 10million television viewers in South Africa watched the host nation play Mexico to open the World Cup at Soccer City on Friday.

Fifa, the world soccer governing body, says 87percent of people watching television at home in South Africa last Friday tuned in to SABC1 and SuperSport 3 broadcasts of the 1-1 draw.

That's nearly 3million more viewers than South Africa's highest-rated sports broadcast last year, when Bafana Bafana played Brazil in the Confederations Cup.

Fifa said almost one in five Mexicans with a TV set at home watched last Friday's opener. In the US, Spanish-language channel Univision averaged 5,4million viewers, double its audience compared with 2006, when Germany opened the World Cup against Costa Rica. - Sapa-AP
