THE South African National Blood Service hosted the World Blood Donor Day in Soweto .

The purpose of the event, which was held at Maponya Mall yesterday, was to promote blood donation and educate people on donation of bone marrow and organs, and to create cancer awareness.

The event also presented the SANBS with a chance to educate the public about the Health Department's Lifestyle and Wellness campaign that focuses on blood education.

To be a blood donor, one needs to be between 16 and 65 years, weigh 50kg or more and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.

People can donate blood every 56 days. To find a blood donation site close to you, call SANBS on 0800-119-031.
