davids heads to belgium

BAFANA Bafana defensive midfielder Lance Davids has attributed his transfer to ambitious Belgium side FC Liersehard to work at Absa Premiership club at Ajax Cape Town.

BAFANA Bafana defensive midfielder Lance Davids has attributed his transfer to ambitious Belgium side FC Liersehard to work at Absa Premiership club at Ajax Cape Town.

Speaking to journalists in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, after a Bafana training session yesterday, Davids said he signed a three year deal with FC Liers on Saturday.

"I'm excited to have signed with FC Liers, they have just been promoted to the First Division League," said Davids, who has 16 Bafana Bafana caps.

"The owners of FC Lierse (Herman Helleputte and Neel De Ceulaer) told me they were investing a lot of money in the team because they want the team to do well in Belgium and the Uefa Champions leagues.

"I don't think my move to Belgium has anything to do with my being part of the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. I had a good season at my club Ajax Cape Town.

"I think that's what persuaded the new owners of the club to sign me. I'm looking forward to going back to Europe and do well.

"As for Bafana Bafana, I'm happy to be part of the World Cup team. Obviously, it's disappointing not to play, but I'm supporting the team.

"I know my chance to play will come. We have depth in our squad. We are one united team. The most important thing is for us to get the points," said Davids, who has played for all South African national teams, from Majimbos, Amajita, Under-23s to Bafana Bafana.

Davids left South Africa in 2003 at the age of 14 to join German side 1860 Munich, where the Capetonian made his Bundesliga debut.

He later moved from Germany to Sweden, where he signed for Djurgardens but returned to South Africa in 2009 in order to enhance his chances of being part of the 2009 Confederations Cup squad.

In South Africa Davids joined league champions SuperSport United, but spent the last six months of the season with Cape Town' s Urban Warriors.
