THE Congress of the People in the Ilembe region of KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal has called on Premier Zweli Mkhize to suspend Sdudla Mhlongo.
Mhlongo is the ANC's ward 10 councillor. Cope regional spokesperson Siyanda Mhlongo said they were concerned that MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs Nomsa Dube had "withdrawn" Mhlongo's suspension.
"It is normal procedure that a person under investigation must be suspended so that she does not interfere with witnesses and the evidence.
"At a meeting with the community on May 30, Dube, after listening to complaints against the councillor, announced that she would be suspended and another councillor would be deployed in the ward during Mhlongo's absence," Mhlongo said.
He said more than 2000 residents were pleased by Dube's announcement.
"She promised to set up a team to investigate the concerns of the people and the allegations of corruption. Days have gone by without the team being announced. Now there is an announcement that she is not suspended," he said.
Mhlongo said there was ample evidence of corruption relating to a housing project and the disappearance of housing material worth R500000.
"Cope is convinced that as more than 2000 people signed a petition demanding that Dube and the ANC recall Mhlongo, the authorities should not renege from suspending her until an investigation is complete. We also ask Dube to conduct a referendum to test the public mood about the councillor," he said.
"We urge Mkhize to visit the ward and hear people's grievances. He promised good governance, which is lacking in ward 10," Mhlongo said.
