THE longest-serving general secretary of Cosatu, Zwelinzima Vavi, has publicly said that he will not stand for the position again in the next election.

It is an open secret that Vavi has cabinet minister ambitions. But his frankness has put him at odds with the ANC kingmakers - the ANCYL - and his political future looks dim.

Cosatu has threatened to quit the alliance if the ANC disciplines Vavi over his allegation that some of the party' s cabinet ministers are corrupt and that nothing is being done about it.

Will the ANC dare its alliance partners and tell them they are free to leave ? The answer is a resounding no. This is just history repeating itself.

The relationship between the ANC and its partners is at an all-time low. It is unhealthy, destructive and abusive.

Quite frankly, the ANC is being petty by trying to haul Vavi before a disciplinary committee. The way the matter has been handled leaves a lot to be desired.

For instance, Vavi heard through the media that the ANC intended to discipline him and on the other hand the ANC has remained mum about the matter.

Why is the issue shrouded in secrecy?

The ANC once accused Cosatu of assuming an opposition role. This suggests that they are no longer comfortable with the federation's role (and Vavi in particular) of keeping it on its toes. The alliance is no longer serving its purpose. It is time to admit that the marriage has run its course and they should part amicably.
