THE ANC in the eThekwini region said yesterday it would replace the R1,5million elephant statues with the Big Five.
The elephant statues, which were erected early this year by internationally acclaimed local sculptor Andries Botha, were criticised by the ANC because the party felt the statues resembled the logo of its opposition, the IFP.
Botha had been commissioned by the eThekwini municipality to produce the massive pieces as part of a R500million upgrade of Durban's new Warwick Avenue interchange.
Botha's R3million sculpture of King Shaka at the King Shaka International Airport in La Mercy has been largely criticised for it portraying Shaka "more like a herd boy".
ANC eThekwini regional spokesperson James Nxumalo said: "It is important to highlight the fact that the municipality has agreed that it is the Big Five that is going to be erected in Warwick Avenue because for most tourists and South Africans the Big Five represent a majestic symbol of South Africa's huge collection of wildlife."
