Mkhize set to account

KWAZULU-NATAL Premier Zweli Mkhize will mark his first year in office today with a media briefing.

Political parties and influential stakeholders in the private sector have already commented on what they think of his performance.

Mkhize is expected to reflect on what the provincial government has done to deal with the issue of over-expenditure, which nearly affected service delivery.

His spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said the new administration had inherited financial problems and were hit by the global recession just days after taking office.

"The premier relied on his experience as MEC for finance to ensure attention was focused on capacity building and the strengthening of an entrepreneurial culture," Sibiya said.

The provincial government has been lambasted for failing to curb widespread corruption involving government officials.

The premier recently announced that the province had joined forces with law enforcement agencies and other structures in the forensic industry, purportedly to root out corruption.
