THE ANC Youth League wants Cape Town mayor Dan Plato arrested.
Yesterday the league laid a charge of malicious damage to property and incitement to violence against Plato at the Khayelitsha police station, ANCYL Cape Town deputy secretary Chumile Sali told Sowetan.
The malicious damage to property charge relates to Plato authorising city workers to remove about 50 open-air toilets. The incitement charge relates to Plato telling Makhaza residents to burn tyres and protest against the ANCYL.
Sali said the ANCYL would also take the DA to the public protector over the R420million spent by the City of Cape Town on consultants last year.
In an indication that it plans to rev up its war against the DA, the ANCYL held a press conference yesterday accusing the DA of misspending millions on consultants for the Integrated Rapid Transport (IRT) system.
The ANCYL's Sali said: "Tenders were issued like Christmas presents for friends of DA officials. There's a smell of corruption in the IRT system," he said.
Two weeks ago the DA came under fire when local newspapers reported that it had spent R472million on consultants. One company was "paid close to R20million to advise the city on the IRT".
The consultancy cost the municipality a further R80million after saying they were "not liable to pay VAT".
The city could not immediately comment on the ANCYL's threat to take it to the public protector. The DA has denied any wrongdoing.
