Some irritating letdowns, but let's enjoy the Cup party folks

ONE of the cheesiest tag lines I've heard in recent times is the SABC's "Feel it. It is here".

ONE of the cheesiest tag lines I've heard in recent times is the SABC's "Feel it. It is here".

Yet just the other day I was watching one of the international friendly games being played at the moment and I had to admit to the fact that I was now living this cheesy line because, man, I could feel it. And it hit me like the days before Christmas.

Now, here are a few thoughts on this massive event. First, I was kind of surprised when Benni McCarthy's name did not come up in any of the sports pieces I read when speculation mounted as to which players would be left out of the final Bafana Bafana squad.

I think many sports journalists were shocked when Benni was left out. Unlike them though, I was not surprised. On the contrary, my belief that in Carlos Parreira we have a good coach was reinforced.

Benni is a special South African. But the decision to leave him out is the correct one. For one thing, it serves as a morale booster.

Every player chosen for our squad knows now more than ever that he is in the squad on merit and current form.

Now, what's up with the street signs in Jo'burg?

Here we are, literally on the verge of receiving the highest number of the World Cup fans who are coming to our shores and the streets are virtually unmarked all over Jozi.

It took a French journalist I know over an hour to find a place that was 20 minutes from where he was. Even his GPS navigation system could not help him because he could not read the virtually non-existent street signs!

Talking about proper indicators, it took me about 25 minutes to find my seat at Orlando Stadium when I went there to watch the Blue Bulls wallop the Crusaders.

The first usher I asked sent me west, the second one sent me south to the media suite, the third did not know, and the fourth sent me to the gate next to the one manned by the first one, and that was the correct entrance.

When I tried to find the seat myself, I discovered that every entrance was marked AA-JJ. My ticket said I was to sit on CC.

Come on Danny Jordaan, if you can't mark the stadium seats properly, at least train ushers to know the stadiums!

But that said, let's enjoy the party folks. We are living in awesome times.
