THE R3million King Shaka statue at the recently opened King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal has finally been removed.
The statue, which caused a stir among the Zulu royal family, who believed it made the legendary monarch look like a "herd boy" rather than a warrior, was removed on Wednesday night.
Royal family spokesperson Prince Mbonisi Zulu said Zulu monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini had expressed reservations about certain features of the statue.
He met Premier Zweli Mkhize and raised his concerns. It was decided that the statue should be removed.
Mkhize indicated on Wednesday night that the statue would be re-sculptured, and that the location and height of the statue would be changed.
The IFP has since criticised the move as "wasteful expenditure".
