THE South African Literary Awards are alive and active as will be proved by two related events in July and December.
The winners for the awards' 2009 edition will be announced in Johannesburg on July 27. A gala to recognise, acknowledge and reward both the 2009 and 2010 winners will be staged on December 8, all these in the following categories:
l First-time Published Author Award;
Poetry Award;
l Literary Translators Award;
l Lifetime Achievement Literary Award;
l Nadine Gordimer Short Story Award For Writing in African Languages (SA);
l K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award (for novels and novellas);
l Literary Journalism Award; and the
l Posthumous Literary Award.
Literary icon Keorapetse Kgositsile is the poet laureate. The late Mazisi Kunene was the awards' inaugural poet laureate.

Nation-building partners who are the power behind the success of the awards are the Department of Arts and Culture and Ministry, wRite Associates, Sowetan, Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, Nutrend Publishers and the National Arts Council. Since their inception in 2005, the awards have honoured 56 literary icons, 43 of whom were honoured between 2005 and 2007. Samples of their work appear in a commemorative compilation titled Band of Troubadours.
Some of the writers who have been honoured through the awards are: Es'kia Mphahlele, Noni Jabavu, Ellen Khuzwayo, Nadine Gordimer, Denis Brutus, James Matthews, TN Maumela, Miriam Tlali, ES Madima, Modikoe Dikobe, DBZ Ntuli, Lauretta Ngcobo, Ronnie Govender, André Brink, Peter Abrahams, Lewis Nkosi, Don Mattera, Wally Mongane Serote, Oswald Mtshali, Mafika Gwala, Sipho Sepamla, Athol Fugard, Max Marhanele, Victor Dlamini, Bongani Madondo, Njabulo Ndebele and Miriam Makeba.
