Fong kongs rise as kickoff nears

AS the World Cup excitement reaches fever pitch around the country, so has the appetite for Bafana Bafana jerseys - original or fake.

AS the World Cup excitement reaches fever pitch around the country, so has the appetite for Bafana Bafana jerseys - original or fake.

The recent seizure of more than 32000 of the hugely popular jerseys in the Durban harbour brings the value of fake World Cup paraphernalia confiscated by the port watchdogs to a whopping R100million, Sars spokesperson Sibabalwenathi Mfabe said.

He said they believed the culprit was the same importer who earlier this month brought in 48 000 imitation Bafana jerseys.

The container, which had been profiled and examined by Sars customs officials, had one row of pots with the rest of the container filled with the suspected counterfeit jerseys.

Adidas lawyers will do tests on the status of the merchandise, Mfabe said.

He said their sting operations were to protect the country's economic interests as well as Fifa's intellectual property rights.

Last week nine men were arrested for possessing 3 000 fake jerseys with a street value of R2 million.

The men were arrested on the Mozambican border by the South African police.
