THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has warned that the controversial N2 Wild Coast Tollgate project planned for the N2 highway has the potential to cause unrest.
This was one of the issues discussed during the provincial executive council meeting on Monday.
There has been upheaval since the SA National Roads Agency proposed the N2 Wild Coast Tollgate project, which includes two new mainline toll plazas at Isipingo and Park Rynie, and other new ramp plazas along the South Coast.
ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said: "The PEC has noted the outcry that has ensued following the construction of the tollgate at King Shaka International Airport and the proposed introduction of a new tollgate in Amanzimtoti.
"The PEC was informed that this issue has been raised with the Minister of Transport Sbu Ndebele. A meeting with Sanral, the government and the minister will soon take place to clarify these matters.
"As the ANC we are unhappy and against the introduction of these tollgates," Zikalala said.
"Given the fact that they come against the backdrop of the economic meltdown, which resulted in many of our people joining the unemployment ranks, we believe that they will put an added economic burden on our people."
