Mthunzi Ngcobo fired several shots at his stepmother, Vonto Ngcobo, whom he accused of practising witchcraft. She was found dead in a pool of blood in the impoverished Mkhonjane village.
Some villagers are now allegedly demanding that women suspected of witchcraft be eliminated.
Mthunzi Ngcobo, a trainee sangoma, later allegedly shot himself dead in front of his brother Mjikiseni.
It is alleged that he claimed to have visions of his stepmother (Vonto) colluding with women who practised witchcraft.
"I was preparing to return to my workplace when Mthunzi ran out of our house to our stepmother's homestead. I tried to stop him but he was too quick for me.
"When I arrived at our stepmother's house, he had already shot her," Mjikiseni Ngcobo said.
Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said when police arrived on the scene the two Ngcobo family members were already dead.
He said the police were monitoring the situation in the area.
"We are investigating a case of murder. An inquest will be held," he said. - Mhlaba Memela
