"If the decision is allowed to stand, it will create a terrible precedent that would spell the end of the alliance, whose strength has always been that it is a partnership of independent organisations with shared values and principles for which they have come together to struggle," Cosatu said in a statement yesterday.
Cosatu went on to vow that, as the federation's leader, Vavi would not subject himself to any disciplinary action by the ANC.
"No leader of Cosatu can or will ever be disciplined by another organisation for doing the federation's work on behalf of its two million members.
"Zwelinzima Vavi speaks as the voice of the workers and the poor, fully mandated by the Cosatu membership, and will never be silenced by threats of disciplinary charges."
Cosatu's fiery response follows media reports that the ANC national working committee on Monday discussed disciplining Vavi "for ill-discipline".
This after Vavi publicly accused ANC ministers of corruption.
The federation has also called for an urgent meeting with the ANC leadership to discuss the matter.
Yesterday Cosatu said Vavi's views were not personal but represented what the federation's central committee felt about how the government was dealing with corruption.
In its statement Cosatu said there was a perception out there that the government was soft when it came to dealing with corruption by politically connected individuals - including cabinet members.
This is because newspapers continue to carry stories about corruption against ministers but the public still has to hear President Jacob Zuma or the cabinet announcing that such allegations will be investigated.
The labour federation yesterday claimed that the decision to discipline Vavi was driven by "a tendency within the ANC leadership who are hellbent on their agenda of self-enrichment and crass materialism".
