Call for boycott of Cup concert

THE Creative Workers Union of SA has called on South Africans to boycott next week's World Cup Kickoff Celebration Concert at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Led by CWUSA president Mabutho "Kid" Sithole and general secretary Oupa Lebogo, they claimed yesterday that the June 10 concert had "a Eurocentric artistic ideology that does not suit Africa".

The SA Football Player Union, SA National Civics Organisation, uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association, Young Communist League, ANCYL, SA Students Congress and the SA Liquor Traders Association joined the call for a boycott.

"We are appealing to people to stay at home and not to go to this concert," Sithole said.

Artists confirmed on the Fifa website for the main concert include Alicia Keys, Angelique Kidjo, Black Eyed Peas, Freshlyground, Hugh Masekela, John Legend, Juanes, Shakira, Soweto Gospel Choir, The Parlotones and Vusi Mahlasela.

The group also expressed frustration at the cost of concert tickets at R450 each.
