THE Nkonjeni Market and Training Centre is a white elephant, a decade after its construction to alleviate poverty and unemployment in rural Zululand.
The structure was built with funding from the department of public works, the municipal infrastructure grant and the Zululand district municipality.
The Nkonjeni project has a market, a crèche and a community hall that has never been used.
Local councillor Bongani Khanyile said: "The project is a total failure. The unavailability of electricity is a major reason the centre is not working."
