On Friday the NHBRC held its open day at Birchwood Hotel, Ekurhuleni, to launch a new national programme to ensure that quality homes are built.
The open day also introduced the inspectorate companies that will be found in every province in the country.
Home builders also signed an industry charter.
NHBRC cheif executive Sipho Mashinini said the event marked a new era in home building.
"We wanted to re-launch the organisation, explain to home builders what we do and also outline the standards we expect to the constructors."
Jeffrey Mahachi, technical and IT director at NHBRC, said the government was planning to build 300000 houses in the next three years.
"If the government builds houses at its projected rate, we are going to provide 400 inspectors on the ground."
Mahachi said that about 140 inspectors were certified last week and would be deployed in various parts of the country.
"The time of shoddy houses is over. Every new home built will be inspected."
"If the house does not comply with the stipulated standards we will ask the builder to demolish that part which is not correct and in some instances even demolish the whole house," he said.
Mahachi said the inspection process would focus on foundation, floor, walls, roof, storm water and drainage systems.
"Builders submit the design and we tell them what kind of foundation is needed for their type of structure.
"We will also take the material used to build the house for testing. If we find it does not comply, we will order the constructor to stop the project."
He said inspectors were recruited from people in civil engineering, architecture and quantity surveying.
Mahachi said the NHBRC was offering free courses to builders registered with them.
The courses include construction project management, cost estimation, financial management, bricklaying, rooflaying, concrete technology and plastering.
