SOUTH African welterweight champion Chris "The Heat" van Heerden suffered his first defeat in 16 fights when he dropped a split points decision to Nikola Stevanovic for the IBF Inter-Continental junior middleweight title in Belgrade, Serbia, on Saturday night.
Stevanovic enjoyed physical advantage against the South African. Both fighters are both promoted by Branco Milenkovic.
" I realise that Chris may be too small for the junior middleweight division. He is still growing and it is for this reason that he will remain in the welterweight division," Milenkovic said.
"We expect him to make his mandatory defence against Boitshepo Mandawe, who Chris beat in a good fight in Meyerton in May last year."
Milenkovic added that a Bosnian judge and Simon Xlamlashe from South Africa both scored the fight in favour of the Stevanovic, while Jaap van Niewenhuizen scored it in favour of Van Heerden.
