Cup frenzy hits Jozi

THE Soweto Football Association (SFA) and Johannesburg's municipality will stage a new tournament modelled on the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

THE Soweto Football Association (SFA) and Johannesburg's municipality will stage a new tournament modelled on the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The 2010 Mayor's Cup will feature 32 teams from areas like Soweto, Orange Farm, Randburg, Eldorado Park, Alexandra, Ennerdale, Honeydew and Diepsloot. It will run parallel to the world cup between June and July.

"The mandate we received from the City of Johannesburg is that we should use the Mayors' Cup to spread the gospel of the 2010 World Cup," said SFA chief executive Phil "Chippa" Mogodi.

"The Mayor's Cup will also cover all the regions of the City of Johannesburg municipality starting from June 12 until July 9. We will be using it to promote mass participation in soccer in Johannesburg," said Mogodi who is still suspended by the Safa branch in Johannesburg.

It will have its own organising committee that will include officials from the mayor's office.
