Tzaneen takes Cup to the people

POOR people from around the Greater Tzaneen Municipality in Limpopo will have an opportunity to enjoy World Cup games at public viewing areas to be set up at the Nkowankowa Stadium.

This will be coordinated by the local municipality in conjunction with Big Jam Sports Marketing.

Faith Mashianoke, the municipality's local economic manager, announced the collaboration at the official launch of the public viewing plan outside Tzaneen on Tuesday.

Mashianoke said they had piloted the public viewing areas on June 15 last year during the Confederations Cup first-round match between Brazil and Egypt.

Locals will be able to watch the opening match between South Africa and Mexico on June 11, followed by Bafana Bafana's first-round final match against France on June 22. A semifinal match will be screened on July 6 and the final on July 11.

Mashianoke said a variety of entertainment had been lined up for soccer fans, including traditional acts and music by local artists. "This is a World Cup experience away from the stadium that will bring games to the people who cannot afford or get to the live matches," she said.

Mass mobilisation roadshows will be conducted in four clusters to raise awareness of public viewing areas.

The first mobilisations will take place at the Tzaneen taxi rank tomorrow, followed by Lenyenye township next Sunday, Relela village on June 4 and Runnymede village on June 5.

Mashianoke said hawkers would be able to sell their products in the area.
