TALK Radio 702 presenter Redi Direko has once again been selected as one of the few influential women in the media.
Direko is among the five finalists vying for this year's 1st for Women Insurance Women in the Media Award.
Other finalists are Irna van Zyl, executive director and editorial director of New Media Publishing, Devi Sankaree Govender, investigative journalist and presenter on Carte Blanche, Katy Katopodis, editor-in-chief of Primedia Broadcasting and Liza Albrecht, Rapport editor.
The 1st for Women Insurance Women in the Media Award was established in 2003 to recognise exceptional women who have made their mark in the media industry. They have included categories such as the Rising Stars Award, which Direko had scooped in the past, and the Lifetime Achievers Award.
"We have spent eight years recognising remarkable women in the media," said Sandra Gordon, publisher of The Media magazine and founder of the event.
"I continue to be surprised by the number of women who are holding down significant positions in the media but who are not afforded the same recognition as their male counterparts," Gordon said. "It is clear that this award still has a major part to play and I am pleased to see the commitment of past winners to this initiative."
Speaking on behalf of the judges, Gordon said the finalists were once again indicative of the high calibre of women across the political, economic and social spheres of the media.
"The panel would like to see more nominations for women in media agencies. This is where the rubber hits the road, where the economics of our industry comes into focus."
The winner of the 1st for Women in the Media Award as well as the 1st for Women Rising Star Award (an under-30-year-old making her mark) and the 1st for Women Lifetime Achiever Award will be announced on July 29.
Previous winners of this prestigious award include Debra Patta, Pheladi Gwangwa, Ferial Haffajee, Patricia Scholtemeyer and Libby Lloyd.
