City wants DA councillor out

The City of Cape Town voted yesterday to fire DA councillor Charlotte Tabisher, who was found guilty on eight counts of misconduct and one of fraud.

The City of Cape Town voted yesterday to fire DA councillor Charlotte Tabisher, who was found guilty on eight counts of misconduct and one of fraud.

But DA chief whip Anthea Serritslev, who also chairs the city's disciplinary committee, lashed out at suggestions that Tabisher extorted money from the poor in exchange for state subsidised housing.

She told Sowetan that Tabisher merely "collected" the money on behalf of "illiterate" voters whom she said did not have the ability to set up a savings club.

"The government asked for a top-up of R2000 to R4000 to get a house. The community formed a savings club to raise the money ... she collected the money but had no bookkeeping process. It was constantly going to be deposited into a trust account but never was."

DA MEC for transport and local government Robin Carlisle has three months in which to decide whether to uphold the city's decision to axe Tabisher.
