Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
THE death of a toddler in a lift has sparked anger from the chairperson of the Organisation of Civic Rights, Durban tenant's rights organisation.
"The word crisis in this case is an understatement," Iqbal Mohamed said yesterday after the shocking incident in which two-year-old Mohamed Padayachee plunged 10 floors to his death in a lift in the Durban city centre on Monday night.
Mohamed said he was "horrified" by the incident.
Details of what caused the tragedy are still sketchy, but an eyewitness said yesterday that when she looked into the lift it was "covered in blood".
"I know that he was stuck in the lift and that he was coming from the 10th floor," said the witness, who declined to be named.
"I heard the sound, but when I got there I saw that the lift was covered in blood."
The police have opened an inquest docket. The department of labour is also investigating the incident.
