The Newtown precinct in Braamfontein has great and wonderful things in store for both locals and foreign visitors.
The entertainment ranges from BLK JKS to Black Sonshine, from poetry to traditional dance, from a heritage trail to fun for the kids and a lot more. It' s all happening at the Newtown 2010 Festival in June and July.
This extravaganza of arts, culture, entertainment and literature will showcase the finest that South Africa and Africa has to offer.
The Newtown 2010 Festival has been been made possible by a more than R3,1million grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. The money was made available to the Newtown Management District
Some of the events will kick off this month as a build-up to what is still to come.
The extensive entertainment menu, which is anchored in the City of Johannesburg's 2010 World Cup public viewing area, includes music, dance, theatre, poetry, literature, crafts, film, photography, science, free outdoor performances and visual art exhibitions held in a variety of indoor and outdoor venues.
An exciting addition to the attractions is the launch of the Newtown Heritage Trail. Here visitors can take guided tours of Newtown's array of hot spots and cultural treasures.

From June 11 to July 11 Mary Fitzgerald Square will host the City of Johannesburg's 2010 World Cup public viewing area.
It is anticipated that more than 200000 visitors who cannot get to the stadiums will flock to watch the soccer matches on the big screens that will be put up.
Various food and retail stalls will be on offer and there will also be live entertainment from many different countries.
There will be battles between DJs and there will be street marches from Korea and Brazil, and so on.
South African and African music acts will take centre stage, with creative collaborations in a range of genres.
In addition to the various artists who will be performing almost every night at the Bassline in Newtown, there will also be regular themed reggae and ragga nights with Admiral and Jah Seed, jazz nights, Africa nights and so on.
Among the continent's artists who will be showcasing their musical prowess are Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe, Moreira from Mozambique, 340ml from Mozambique, Dudu Manhenga from Zimbabwe, Comrade Fatso from Zimbabwe, Outspoken from Zimbabwe, TJ Dema from Botswana, Mingas from Mozambique and Moticoma also from Mozambique.
International house DJs and the Gatecrash jazz quartet, all the way from the Netherlands, will also make an appearance.
Some of the South African acts during the festival are Pops Mohamed, Ray Phiri, Blk Sonshine, Babu, Strings and Skins, Wouter Kellerman, Tumi, Desmond and the Tutus, Zubz, Heels over Heads, Bheki Khoza, Zuluboy, Zonke, Vuyo, Jamali, Victor Kunonga and Ladies of Song.
