There's no need for multiple water boards

By unknown | May 24, 2010 | COMMENTS [ 0 ]

THE country has about 13 water boards, but thousands of South Africans have no access to water and sanitation.

Most of these boards do not have the capacity to deliver water to municipalities and communities. Can Bushbuckridge provide bulk water? Obviously not.

These boards do not have the capacity to provide water to farmers, let alone to residents.

Why are the boards established in a local municipality and not the Enhlanzeli District Municipality? This would ensure that resources benefit the entire district.

Only Rand Water and Umgeni Water currently have the capacity to provide bulk water .

Municipal affordability to buy water must also be addressed.

Rand Water provides water to Gauteng and parts of the Free State and Mpumalanga on a cherry-picking basis.

How can Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, turn subsistence farmers into commercial farmers when thefarmers have no access to water? Give all farmers water and in 10 years time they will be commercial farmers.

Rand Water was established to assist Johannesburg mines. This can now be extended to other provinces, particularly rural municipalities, instead of water being used for car washes and swimming pools in Gauteng.

This sorry state of affairs will continue until the water boards are amalgamated.

We have one public broadcaster, one electricity distributor and it is time that we have one public water utility.

There will of course be some pockets of resistance to such a move, but this will only be by a few people who have selfish motives.
