RODNEY Hartman, one of the South Africa's greatest sportswriters, has died.
He succumbed to leukaemia last night after a long battle that lasted 15 years. He was 61.
Hartman was sports convenor of the Independent Group at the time of his death. He was also communications manager for the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, working closely with the former chief executive of the United Cricket Board, Dr Ali Bacher.
Golden Gloves Promotions boss Rodney Berman and colleague Jeff Ellis, altruists of note, staged a boxing tournament in March to raise funds for Hartman.
The award-winning Hartman covered rugby, boxing and cricket. The author of former WBA and IBF world junior lightweight champion Brian Mitchell's biography, Champ, Hartman became a journalist in 1968, working at Sapa. He had two stints with the Rand Daily Mail.
