THABILE Mange, in asking "why did Luthuli House appoint Nomvula Mokonyane as Gauteng premier when Paul Mashatile is chairperson?" is being disingenuous (Frank Talk, May 14).

The ANC Polokwane conference resolved that the appointment of premiers would be preceded by the submission of a list of three names for consideration by its national leadership.

The resolution does not entitle a provincial chairperson to a premiership.

So I am dumbfounded by the thinking that the ANC erred in appointing Mokonyane, who was part of that list nogal.

Is it being suggested that the said list was just a sham meant for "compliance"?

And why is Mange approaching political leadership as though it were traditional leadership where one is born a leader or inherits leadership? Mokonyane deserves to be premier and let's give her room to deliver.

It is also worrying that Mange's column is riddled with innuendo.

For instance, he states that Mokonyane is "all talk but no action". Nothing could be further from the truth. According to the recent Markinor survey, Mokonyane is the most effective premier.

She has reconfigured the provincial administration, including the rationalisation of government agencies that will realise a R100million saving, while fearlessly championing an anti-corruption drive.

On the contrary, let's give credit where it is due.

Mokonyane should be applauded for her courage in contesting elections even when the odds were stacked against her. She fought a good fight and getting more than a third of the votes is no mean feat.
