Law planned for defective councils

PLANS are under way to pass legislation that will ensure provincial and national governments intervene in dysfunctional municipalities.

PLANS are under way to pass legislation that will ensure provincial and national governments intervene in dysfunctional municipalities.

This was revealed yesterday by Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance Yunus Carrim when he met the new uMsunduzi municipality executive committee, senior managers and administrator Johann Mettler.

The council has been plagued by numerous problems, culminating in the revelation in February that it was almost bankrupt.

Mettler was hired in March to help it get back on its feet. - Canaan Mdletshe
