THE SA Police Service said yesterday it had not yet made contact with its counterparts in Iraq about a possible violent threat to the World Cup.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nonkululeko Mbatha said they had not successfully contacted police who arrested Saudi national and alleged al-Qaeda militant Abdullah Azzam Saleh Misfar al-Qahtani.

Al-Qahtani "participated in the planning of a terrorist act in South Africa during the World Cup", Baghdad security spokesperson Major General Qassim Atta said at a news conference in the Iraqi capital on Monday, Agence-France Presse had reported.

Mbatha said police would continue to try to make contact. - Sapa
