Stranded commuters feel the crunch

BUSES and taxis saw an influx of commuters yesterday as trains ground to a halt.

BUSES and taxis saw an influx of commuters yesterday as trains ground to a halt.

Thousands sought alternative transport in Johannesburg and Soweto yesterday morning.

More than 11000 United Transport and Allied Union and SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union embarked on a wage strike.

Talks between Passenger Rail Agency of SA and the unions were set to resume at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration late yesterday.

Most train stations were shut down, making it difficult for people to access the platforms.

The absence of trains also tested the capability of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit.

Long queues zigzaged from the Thokoza Park BRT station.

At one stage the station had 10 buses, including feeder buses that were fully packed.

Regular train commuter Thulani Selahle said the strike had affected his budget because he had planned to use the trains.

Another commuter, Jonas Mokhejane, said it would be better if the BRT sold tickets instead of getting off and taking another bus as it was time wasting.

Johannesburg Park Station was also closed since no trains were operating.

Ticket offices were closed and commuters could not even reach the platforms.

Notices of the closure of operations were posted on walls.
