One local judge for Budler rematch

ONLY one South African boxing judge will be involved in the rematch between IBO mini flyweight champion Hekkie Budler and Filipino Juanito Rubillar on June 19.

ONLY one South African boxing judge will be involved in the rematch between IBO mini flyweight champion Hekkie Budler and Filipino Juanito Rubillar on June 19.

The US-based boxing sanctioning body ordered the rematch after Rubillar complained about the verdict of their first fight, which took place at Emperors Palace on February 27.

Two of the three local judges, Lulama Mtya and Deon Dwarte, were patriotic in scoring the fight 117-113 and 115-113 in favour of Budler, while Isaac Tshabalala declared it a stalemate at 114-114.

This time Terence Makaluza from Port Elizabeth will be the only local judge, while the other two judges are Michael Fitzgerald from the US and Reginald Thompson from the UK.

Andile Matika from East London will be the referee.

Golden Gloves Promotion, which staged the first fight, will still be in charge of the second clash at the same venue. It will top their bill that features four championships, and has been dubbed "Blockbuster".

Len Hunt, the IBO's representative in Africa, will retains his position as the fight supervisor.

Budler, 21, did well for three rounds in their first encounter, but the left-handed 33-year-old Filipino took over from the fourth, digging deep into Budler's mid-section.

The complexion of the fight changed from round seven as Rubillar added more power to his punches. Budler soldiered on until the last round.

But Mtya's and Dwarte's scorecards told a different story.

Budler, who is trained by Colin Nathan, promised to prove to his doubters that he is made of sterner stuff. The flaxen-haired fighter has 15 victories with five stoppages.

Rubillar has 48 wins (23 KOs) against 15 losses.
