Beacon of light

WE doff our hats to the City of Tshwane for renaming Super Stadium in Atteridgeville after legendary Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe.

WE doff our hats to the City of Tshwane for renaming Super Stadium in Atteridgeville after legendary Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe.

Moripe's honour is refreshing because he is not a politician. Indeed, we are grateful to our struggle heroes. But they should not be the only people national roads, stadiums, hospitals and schools are named after.

After all, thousands of others inside the country - in their own special way - helped keep us sane against oppression.

This should also serve as a precedent: beacons of light deserve accolades while still alive. Why wait for them to pass on before we honour them?

"Modimo wa Bolo", as Moripe was known in his heyday at Pretoria Callies, made a valuable contribution to the fight against apartheid through football.

Kudos to the City of Tshwane and Mayor Gwen Ramokgopa. Others will only learn from you.
