Superfans drumming up support for Bafana

PROMINENT South African soccer lovers have embarked on a nationwide tour to drum up support for Bafana Bafana for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

PROMINENT South African soccer lovers have embarked on a nationwide tour to drum up support for Bafana Bafana for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The Castle Superfans include Johannes "Mzion" Mofokeng (Orlando Pirates), Thomas "Rasta" Mokhari (Moroka Swallows) and Robert "Mzekezeke" Nkosi (Mamelodi Sundowns).

The Superfans are 16 passionate supporters of all Absa Premiership clubs, who have been brought together as Castle ambassadors.

The beer company's Errol Mchunu says the role of the Superfans is to engage South Africans and instil a sense of national pride in Bafana Bafana.

They will visit Cape Town, East London, Durban, Nelspruit, Tshwane, Mafikeng, Rustenburg, Bloemfontein, Vereeniging and Johannesburg.

Mofokeng said: "We will be travelling throughout the country to galvanise support for Bafana Bafana and the World Cup in general.

"It is important for us as South Africans to support Bafana Bafana and also heed the call by Dr Irvin Khoza (Local Organising Committee chairperson) to rally behind the other five African teams."

Absa, another premier sponsor of the team, is also mobilising support for Bafana Bafana using projects linked to their products. Stewart Masela, the bank's sponsorship manager, said their fabric wall where ordinary people write messages of support for Bafana Bafana has proved to be a success.

"We have taken it (the fabric wall) to the Bafana Bafana hotel in Sandton so that the players can see the whole country is behind them.

There are other projects we are working on but, including forming a partnership with the University of Johannesburg.

"As you are aware, the university's residence will also be used during the World Cup as accommodation for the fans," Masela said.

Mike Ntombela's Adidas, Bafana Bafana's technical sponsor, also has the giant replica jersey of the team that South Africans are writing messages of support on.
