Why Inkatha shelved poll

IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi says the decision to postpone the party's annual general conference as well as the elective conference was a collective decision by the national council members, including national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi.

IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi says the decision to postpone the party's annual general conference as well as the elective conference was a collective decision by the national council members, including national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi.

The annual conference, which was to be held at the end of the month, was postponed to the end of July.

"Faced with the fact that several of our districts and constituencies have not yet held elective conferences, it became clear to us that holding our AGC in three weeks' time, as scheduled, would go against our constitution," Buthelezi said.

He said the constitution required that necessary steps be completed in advance before it was held.

"As national council, we have no authority to circumvent the constitution, no matter how long we have waited for the conference to be held. It fell to us to postpone the conference yet again," Buthelezi said.
