Teacher smiles as department reinstates her

A DISGRUNTLED Northern KwaZulu-Natal teacher was yesterday vindicated when the provincial department of education reinstated her with immediate effect.

A DISGRUNTLED Northern KwaZulu-Natal teacher was yesterday vindicated when the provincial department of education reinstated her with immediate effect.

Ntombifuthi a Mpanza, a teacher at the Danhauser Primary School with 13 years experience, had her services "wrongfully" terminated by the department.

Mpanza said in February this year she sent a letter of resignation to the department but had later withdrawn it in writing.

She said she even informed the inspector of schools and her principal about it but her services were still terminated.

Mpanza argued that her services were unlawfully terminated since she had not signed the notification of termination service form.

When contacted for comment, department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said after investigating the matter the department had discovered it had only received Mpanza's withdrawal letter yesterday.

"A letter cancelling Mpanza's termination, dated February 10 2010, was received in this office on May 12 2010. She was reappointed on May 12 with no break in service," Mlotshwa said.

Mpanza discovered that she was not on the payroll anymore when she did not receive last month's salary.

"Her April and May salary will be paid and her salary will be back to normal from June 15," Mlotshwa said.

Mpanza said: "I am happy to know that I have been reappointed but I am still disappointed since this might happen to other teachers as well."

National Teachers Union spokesperson Allen Thompson said: "The withdrawal of the resignation should be seen as an advantage by the department since experienced teachers are a great necessity."
