IN THREE years, our Public Private Mix has achieved some great successes and positively impacted on many of the communities we operate in. However, more effort is still required to tackle the scale of the HIV impact in Mpumalanga.
More needs to be done, and this means that companies, government representatives, civil society and those in the health sector need to collaborate on a greater scale.
The PPM model that we have applied in Mpumalanga is now a proven success. Therefore, we can start to introduce more partners to the PPM, including other mining companies within South Africa's "Coal Belt". This means that our sector, which is affected by common issues and threats to business operations, can achieve even greater positive social impacts by working together to alleviate the HIV scourge. We have recently extended our partnership, which now includes our sister company Xstrata Alloys, Anglo American, Eskom, Sasol, BHP Billiton and Harmony.
The fundamental goals and principles of the PPM model will not change as the model is extended. For example, we will continue to align our goals with government targets and adapt to the needs of the community through the human scale approach. This includes building capacity within government services to strengthen health systems. The core criteria of participation, coordination, harmonisation and accountability will also continue to be applied to the PPM.
The PPM model has been developed and improved over the three years of working together - and it is a model of which we are proud. It can be replicated to address other issues outside of the health sector such as water resources, housing, education or skills development. At the same time, it always ensures that every partner is working within their own capacity and competency to bring about the best results.
