Mikel and Kanu in Cup squad

LAGOS - Nigeria have picked England-based stars John Obi Mikel and veteran Nwankwo Kanu in a 30-man preliminary squad for next month's World Cup.

LAGOS - Nigeria have picked England-based stars John Obi Mikel and veteran Nwankwo Kanu in a 30-man preliminary squad for next month's World Cup.

Chelsea's Mikel is nursing a knee injury that needed surgery recently, while Kanu's future at English club Portsmouth, where he has battled for a regular place, is in some doubt.

Two players from the domestic league, Lobi Stars defender Terna Suswan and Bayelsa United goalkeeper Bassey Akpan, were also included.

Coach Lars Lagerback announced the squad on Monday.

The squad is expected to be trimmed to 23 by the end of the month. The Super Eagles are drawn in Group B with Argentina, Greece and South Korea.

The preliminary team is: Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama, Dele Aiyenugba, Austin Ejide, Bassey Akpan; Defenders: Taye Taiwo, Elderson Echiejile, Chidi Odiah, Onyekachi Apam, Joseph Yobo, Daniel Shittu, Ayodele Adeleye, Rabiu Afolabi, Terna Suswan; Midfielders: Kalu Uche, Dickson Etuhu, Mikel, Sani Kaita, Haruna Lukman, Yusuf Ayila, Yakubu Aiyegbeni; Strikers: Victor Anichebe, Chinedu Obasi, Kanu, John Utaka, Obafemi Martins, Brown Ideye, Peter Utaka, Ikechukwu Uche, Obinna Nsofor and Osaze Odemwingie. - Sapa-AFP
