Mbombela Stadium ready for kickoff

Mbombela Stadium will be officially opened with glitz and glamour this weekend.

Mbombela Stadium will be officially opened with glitz and glamour this weekend.

The main event will be a friendly match between Bafana Bafana and Thailand on Sunday.

The stadium was dubbed the miracle stadium after the grass had to be removed twice to meet strict Fifa requirements. Mbombela executive mayor Lassy Chiwayo said the newly planted grass miraculously grew within two weeks.

"We are proud of what we have achieved," Chiwayo said. "We strongly believe that we have been able to remain truly African in that the design of our stadium resembles the Kruger National Park with the zebra designed seats and giraffe pillars that hold up the stadium.

"Mbombela is ready. The people have risen to the challenge."

Chiwayo said 26 days before the World Cup, the official opening of the stadium would be used as a trial run "by hosting Bafana Bafana and Thailand in an international friendly match".

The weekend events start on Friday with the Football Friday Carnival, at the Mataffin Old Cricket Club, Mbombela Stadium precinct, with an exciting lineup of local and national DJs

These include DJ Fistaz, DJ Sdunkero and Ligwalagwala DJs. A spectacular music concert is scheduled for Saturday from noon to midnight.

The Saturday lineup features more than 20 of the greatest performers in South Africa, including Teargas, Malaika, Speedy and Stoan, Prokid, Winnie Khumalo and Rhythmic Elements.

The game on Sunday will have a world-class opening production with 800 choreographed local schoolchildren and traditional dancers .
