Raymond Motsepe, the municipality's executive mayor, said they wanted all four matches at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace to be played in front of big crowds.
This comes after Fifa and the Local Organising Committee announced that World Cup ticket sales in Rustenburg, Polokwane, Mbombela and Port Elizabeth were poor. Rustenburg is one of the nine World Cup host cities. The matches in Rustenburg will be played at the refurbished Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng.
Motsepe said: "The Mayoral Cup is one of the platforms we are using to promote the World Cup in this area. The support from the committee is highly appreciated."
Top players such as Michael Essien (Ghana), Wayne Rooney (England), Clint Dempsey (USA) and Harry Kewell (Australia) will be seen in action in Phokeng.
"Our message to our people here in North West and the rest of SA is that they must go out and buy World Cup tickets," Motsepe said.
North West will have three national teams, including the Rooney-led England, setting up their base camps in the province.
England will stay at the new Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace, built to the tune of R310million. Spain (Potchefstroom) and South Korea (Rustenburg) will also be based in North West.
