A CHARGE of conspiracy to commit murder has been added against five men accused of plotting to assassinate KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize, the Pinetown magistrate's court heard.
Themba Xaba, Jackson Chili, Mlungisi Xulu, Sthembiso Mthembu and Sizwe Mkhize were initially charged with possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
They told the court yesterday they intended to conduct their own defence. When the court heard that a postponement was needed for further police investigations, Chili raised his hand and asked the court to specify what needed to be investigated. "What do they need to investigate? This matter seems to be very clear," he said.
The court indicated that it was not true that the case was "clear".
The police needed to investigate properly because the court needed to listen to both the police and the accused before taking a decision.
The case was postponed until May 26 when the five are expected to bring formal applications for bail.
Cosatu last week called for a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Cosatu provincial secretary Zet Luzipho said the union would write a letter to President Jacob Zuma asking for an inquiry. - Sapa
