CHARMING American fighter Delvin "The Devil" Rodriguez was honoured the Dominican Republic boxer of the year at the annual Athlete of the year awards ceremony last weekend.

The ceremony took place at the Grand Hotel and casino in Santo Domingo.

Rodriguez, who is based in Danbury, Connecticut, United States, holds the USBA welterweight belt. His career is guided by Star Promotions.

"It was a beautiful experience, and a dream come true to receive such an award in front of my entire country," said Rodriguez who celebrated his 30th birthday on May 4.

"Being awarded the best boxer of the year, was such an honour to me, and something I will cherish for a lifetime. My goal now is to win the world championship and bring the belt back to the Dominican Republic."

Rodriguez drew with Isaac "The Angel" Hlatshwayo for the IBF welterweight title eliminator at Emperors Palace on November 12 2008.

Hlatshwayo was down in round nine. He was announced the winner but the result was later changed to a draw.

Chief executive of Star Promotion Joe DeGuardia was at ringside.

DeGuardia described his charge as a class act and gentleman both in and out of the ring. "We are happy that his efforts have been recognized by his country," said DeGuardia.

Rodriguez last fought on April 2 when he defended his USBA championship by winning a unanimous decision over former world-title challenger Mike Arnaoutis at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville.
