THE Limpopo provincial government has assured tourists of their safety after the arrest of suspected right-wing bombers planning to disrupt the World Cup.

Six suspects, charged with conspiracy to engage in acts of terrorism and possession of explosives, appeared in the Phalaborwa magistrate's court last week.

Government spokesperson Mokgale Nchabeleng said tourists who wanted to visit the province should not fear for their safety since Limpopo had a tight security plan.

"They should have confidence and trust in our security since we have proved to be vigilant in dealing with crime," he said.

Norman Mashabane's grave site was the first target of the bombers after it was desecrated at Heroes' Acre cemetery in Pretoria. Mashabane was a former SA ambassador to Indonesia. He died died in a car accident on in October 2007.

Nchabeleng said the government was intensifying its efforts to protect tourists.

Phalaborwa holds the country's annual Marula festival and also relies on mining tourism, with relics dating back to the Iron Age.
